Macon Electric Cooperative has always been committed to the communities it serves. From the very beginning, Macon Electric was founded with the intention of improving the quality of life of its members. That commitment was further enhanced through the creation of the Macon Electric Foundation. MEC’s board of directors founded the Macon Electric Foundation in December of 2016 and established the Operation Round Up program to fund it.
MEC members can give back to their communities through Operation Round Up. With this program, MEC members and PWSD of Macon County customers may choose to round up their monthly electric or water bill to the next highest dollar amount. The difference in change goes directly to the Macon Electric Foundation. On average, members will donate approximately $6.00 a year. With these funds, the Foundation awards grants quarterly to local non-profit organizations.
Since its inception, the Macon Electric Foundation has given out over $13,000 in grants to community groups. Most recently, the Foundation awarded the Mainstreet Macon Downtown Association with a grant for $500 to purchase planters and supplies for the beautification of downtown Macon. The Foundation also awards eight $500 senior scholarships each year.
“Macon Electric Cooperative’s goal is to make a difference in the communities that we serve,” stated Todd Schroeder, MEC General Manager. “This community development program would not be possible without the generosity of the MEC members and PWSD customers who have signed up to participate in Operation Round Up.”
