What is a Service Availability Charge?
The Service Availability Charge covers all of the costs associated with providing and maintaining an electrical distribution system capable of providing power on a 24/7 basis. This includes items like poles, wires, transformers, substations, meter testing, buildings and maintenance, insurance, computer systems and software, and much more. The intent of the Service Availability Charge is to help recover these fixed costs of providing service to our members. To make service available to all members, no matter how far off the beaten path, cooperatives need to have some form of service availability charge. This charge helps to cover the minimum costs that are required to deliver service to every meter on the system - costs that remain no matter how much electricity is sold.
